ISA Visiting Research Fellow Dr Ryan Brading to speak at the Society for Latin American Studies (SLAS) 2013 annual conference

The University of Manchester is expecting to welcome approximately 220 academics to the two-day event at which ISAs Dr Ryan Brading will present 'Hugo Chávez and Cancer: a new theme for populist discourse?'. The conference will run over Thursday afternoon and Friday, and has over 40 panels running in parallel streams, covering many diverse aspects of Latin American studies, in keeping with the broad interests of our membership and the multidisciplinary coverage of SLAS’s journal, the Bulletin of Latin American Research.

Professor Mary Turner

It was with deep sadness that we learned of the death of Professor Mary Turner on 22 January 2013 after a brief illness. Born in Hull in East Yorkshire, she studied history at the University of Manchester. She moved to Jamaica in the early 1950s and developed a life-long fascination for the history of the region. Mary returned to London later in the decade to undertake a PhD. Her long and distinguished career as a teacher and scholar culminated with a Chair in History at Dalhousie University, Canada.
